When planning a trip, most people figure out where they want to go, what they want to see, and then book everything – flights, hotels, transportation, even entry tickets – in advance.
But when I landed in Africa I had no timeline, no set date to leave and no fixed plans that would limit the number of days I could spend in any location. I simply moved to the next town as I felt called to – which meant nearly all of my accommodation was booked either the day I arrived, or 1–2 days before.
What might seem nerve-wracking to some people – not knowing where you'd sleep the next night – wound up teaching me that there's always a place to stay, and sometimes at an incredible discount for booking at the last minute.
Here's how to find places to stay while on the go, the benefits of traveling this way, and when I recommend advance booking instead.
